What is a Virus?

What is a Virus?

Everyone is talking about boosting their immune system right now, but we should always be interested in keeping our immune system at its best.

What is the Immune System and Why is it important

In short, the immune system is a collection of body functions that helps protect our bodies from bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites, commonly referred to as germs.  Throughout our daily lives we are coming in contact with many germs and our immune system is always there working in the background to keep us healthy.

The job of your immune system is to protect your body from these infections. Here are a few examples of how the immune system protects you:

  1. It creates a barrier that prevents bacteria and viruses from entering your body.
  2. If a bacteria or virus does get into the body, the immune system tries to detect and eliminate it before it can make itself at home and reproduce.
  3. If the virus or bacteria is able to reproduce and start causing problems, your immune system is in charge of eliminating it.
What is a Virus

Viruses cause familiar infectious diseases such as the common cold, flu and warts. They also cause severe illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, smallpox, and Ebola.  Viruses come in contact with a cell, attaches itself to the cell wall and injects its DNA (and perhaps a few enzymes) into the cell. The DNA uses the machinery inside the living cell to reproduce new virus particles. Eventually, the hijacked cell dies and bursts, freeing the new virus particles; or the viral particles may bud off of the cell so it remains alive.

Ways to Boost Your Immune System

There are some rather easy ways that you can boost your immune system by having a balanced diet, including regular exercise into your routine, and getting enough sleep.

A Balanced Diet and Supplements

While there isn’t a single most food that can boost your immune system, foods that are high in vitamins A, B, C, D and E and minerals iron, zinc and selenium that can help to boost your immune system.  Aronia Berries, a component of BioVi probiotics, is high in vitamin C and also has vitamin A and E.

BioVi probiotics can play a role in helping boost your immune system.  The probiotic strain in BioVi has been linked to increased levels of cytokines1.  Cytokines are a type of protein that targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response.

In addition to the probiotic, the aronia berry in BioVi also plays an important role to help boost your immune system2.  Aronia berries may also reduce inflammation by inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory substances, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-ɑ) and interleukin 6 (IL-6), which may boost immune health2.  The aronia berry may also have antiviral properties that have been shown in studies to protect against the influenza virus3.

Sleep

Sleep is equally as important as a proper diet in keeping your immune system functioning properly.  According to the Sleep Foundation “without sufficient sleep, your body makes fewer cytokines, a type of protein that targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response. Cytokines are both produced and released during sleep, causing a double whammy if you skimp on shut-eye.”
